React image gallery: choose the browsing behavior first
Use a grid when visitors need to compare images, a carousel when sequence matters, and a lightbox when they need to inspect one image closely. A WebGL gallery can make a strong portfolio introduction. Keep essential captions and destinations available in ordinary page content alongside the visual effect.
Match the interaction to the visitor’s task
“Gallery” describes several different interfaces. Decide whether the visitor is scanning a collection, stepping through a story or opening a detailed view. That decision is more useful than choosing the effect with the most movement.
| Pattern | Useful for | Check before shipping |
|---|---|---|
| Grid with a lightbox | Comparing work, then inspecting one item | Focus returns to the image that opened the dialog |
| Carousel | A short ordered collection | Previous and next controls work without dragging |
| WebGL gallery | A visual portfolio introduction | Text, links and a fallback remain usable without the canvas |
Gallery Lightbox: content belongs in the item model
The published Motion Lexicon ImageLightbox accepts items containing an id, title, optional caption and a React art node. The demo supplies drawn artwork rather than a photo collection. Replace those nodes with your images; installing the demo does not connect a media library or content-management system.
Its source creates a dialog through a portal, includes previous and next controls, handles Escape and arrow keys, traps focus while open and restores focus on close. It reads the reduced-motion preference. Those mechanisms are a useful starting point; test them again with your own page, especially if another modal or sticky navigation is present.
Circular Gallery: treat the canvas as a presentation layer
React Bits Circular Gallery uses OGL to render textured planes and labels in WebGL. That makes a curved, draggable presentation possible, but a caption painted into a texture is not equivalent to a page heading or an image’s alternative text.
Provide an ordinary list of the work, meaningful links and image descriptions outside the canvas when they carry information the visitor needs. Give the gallery a defined height. Check the first render with fonts and images still loading; use assets whose reuse rights you have confirmed.
Install, then replace the sample content
For the lightbox, start with a React project prepared for Tailwind and the configured import alias. Use the installation guide for project setup. Open the installed demo to see the exported item type and its art slot; adapt that composition to your image data.

Set image dimensions or an aspect ratio so the page can reserve space before the image arrives. Serve appropriately sized images for the display width; opening a lightbox need not mean downloading every full-resolution image on initial load. Keep a visible loading or error state when a requested image is unavailable.
Test the gallery with one item, a slow image and a long caption. On a phone, scroll the page past it and make sure the gallery does not trap that gesture. With a keyboard, open an item, move through the collection, close it and confirm where focus lands. A successful package install does not establish those behaviors in your finished product.
How this selection was made
This is a source-based comparison of two published PODIE entries, reviewed October 11, 2026. It distinguishes a DOM dialog from a WebGL presentation rather than ranking them as interchangeable packages. The original files and license information remain available on each component page.
